What are some effective peaceful US responses to 9/11?

Peace!  As the wise saying goes:  "There is no way to peace, peace is the way."  (If you know who said this, please write it in the Guest Book.)  We must actively pursue peaceful means for the resolution of our problems.  This takes real time, real effort and real change.

-  Submit the terrorist acts of September 11th, which were criminal acts on an international scale, to the United Nations and the World Court for investigation, arrest, and trial.

Investigate and improve any truly deficient security measures, without going overboard out fear, which would result in the abdication of privacy and freedoms to governement agencies such as the FBI.

Find international non-violent diplomatic, political, and ecomonic means of decreasing the harboring, training, and tolerance for terrorism and totalitarian regimes.  For example, had the US governement not given money and arms to the Taliban for years, the Taliban would not be as powerful as it is today.

-  Participate in international projects that help the Afghani and Iraqi people through education, information, and other humanitarian aid.  Get to know and empower the Afghani and Iraqi people.

Re-evaluate US international economic and political policies, and change them to be more equitable, respectful, cooperative, and sustainable, and in so doing help create an international atmosphere that is less likely to generate animosity, and is more likely to generate global prosperity and goodwill.

-  Release evidence and openly discuss past US governement involvement and support of  (CIA, military, economic aid, etc.) terrorist groups.

-  Can you think of other "alternative to add to this list?  Please write them in the Guest Book.  Also see the extensive information on our Links page.

Why not wage war now?
- Rather than meeting it's stated ends, this war may actually increase the amount of terrorism towards the US.  One example of this has been happening in Israel.  Israel has been for years responding to terrorist acts with bombings and assasinations.  This has only
increased
the rate of terrorist acts against Israel.  We should not follow the same path.

-  It may provoke further destabilization in the Middle East, leading to more military action between countries in the Middle East and/or with the US and other countries.

- It may provoke the use of chemical, biological, and/or nuclear weapons, to the detriment of all living beings.

-  Beause of the above, and fears of the above, it may throw the US - and other countries - into economic decline and/or chaos.  As an example, the stock market is declining rapidly due to "declining consumer confidence".   Why is consumer confidence declining?  Not primarily becuase of the terrorist bombing of September 11th, but becuase  Americans have deep concerns about the consequences of this war.  We are - quite reasonably - afraid.

It is morally, ethiclly, and spiritually wrong.  Innocent civilians will be injured and killed, an already wounded country will be further devastated, communicaties will be disintegrated and dislocated, there will be likely significant environmental damage, US soldiers and maybe citizens will get injured or killed needlessly...

It does nothing to change some of the economic and political actions and policies
that create conditions (poverty, loss of resources, domination) in other countries that make people in those countries angry (some to pathologically so) at the US.

-  It is un-patriotic, becuase it will unnecessarily lead to injury and death for American soldiers abroad and possibly also for Americans at home (through increased terrorist acts, and chemical, biological, and/or nuclear weapons) and will unncecessarily divert huge resources from the very real needs we have here in America.

-  Can you think of other reasons not to go to war now?  Please write them in the Guest Book above and we may add them here..  Also see the many resources on our Links page.
